Alan Voigts gearboxes was established in Liverpool in 1970
when Alan realised there was a need for a specialised transmission repair workshop. Alan is a time served mechanical engineer. Beginning working life as an engineering apprentice at the Phoenix engineering company in Liverpool, graduating through service in the RAF as a safety equipment worker. Working on safety equipment for Hunter and Javelin aircraft and Whirlwind and Sycamore helicopter.
Then a short spell as a frame builder with a well known racing cycle supplier HarryQuinn cycles.
Finally ending up on first off and tool room inspection at A C Delco automotive component manufactures. Whilst at A C Alan began to repair gearboxes as a side line/hobby. It was after requests from garages, car sales and main dealers that he decided to take the plunge and run it as a full time business.
In 1980 the business was relocated to Wallasey and Mark joined our company.
His first gearbox rebuild was a 1944 Willy’s jeep for a military museum.
Over the years the transmission business has developed as gearboxes have become more mechanically complex. This has necessitated the use of more complicated tooling. We now have apart from the usual spanners sockets pullers etc a tool room lathe, surface grinder, piller drill and a Cincinnatti Milatron Vertical CNC Machining Centre, plus a recent addition a 50 ton press. We can therefore make up all our fixtures for holding gearboxes and supporting gear clusters whilst pressing off their shafts. Plus general machining service. Modern gear boxes like Porsche and Transit M82 require the 50 ton press as gears are a press fit rather than splined onto their shaft.
We keep a large stock of bearings gaskets and seals
to cover most day to day requirements, including bearings for Porsche, Lotus and Maserati these are amongst are specialities.
We also repair all current manual transmissions for most classics ie. Riley, Jaguar, Ferrari, MG, TVR and Healey, etc.
